Ruth Klein's Time Management Expertise
Featured in O, The Oprah Magazine
Ruth Klein, America's De-Stress Diva TM, shared her time management expertise with the readers of O, the Oprah Magazine on how to win back more hours in your day.
The best-selling author and internationally renowned business and lifestyle consultant was quoted on how to save time each morning and throughout every day for today's over-scheduled, increasingly over-worked men and women.
She advised readers in a interview featured in May's editions not to listen to the news when they first wake up, but to instead spend the start of every day on an efficient morning routine that begins with meditation or a quick walk for exercise, getting ready for work and mentally preparing for a productive day.
Constantly going over a to-do list inside your head during the day also is a no-no, according to Klein, owner of the award-winning California-based business, The Marketing/Time Source, and best-selling author.
Instead, Klein suggests carrying a notepad or BlackBerry to jot down tasks to clear your mind for productive ideas and solutions. Klein also suggests turning off cell phones and not answering e-mails during what Klein describes as our Peak Energy Time - that 90 minutes during the day when we are at our most productive, highest energy level.
"I'm delighted to help readers of this well-respected magazine learn how to save time in today's overly busy work and lifestyles. Oprah's engaging, sensible outlook is a joy to me and her many readers and fans," Klein says. O, the Oprah Magazine has more than 2.6 million subscribers.
Klein, the author of five books on business productivity and time management topics, has advised hundreds of clients ranging from solo entrepreneurs to the Fortune 500 on how to find and maximize use of what she describes as our Peak Energy Time.
"What time of day do you have the most energy, when you are least susceptible to the stress? Define your Peak Energy Time, then use it, protect it and own it," advises Klein.
For many people, their peak energy time is in the morning. "I find myself freshest and ready to go in the morning, so I protect my Peak Energy Time by scheduling those hours for my most important work. I block out the time between 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. each day for focused work and also to spend time making long-term plans," Klein says.
"Instead of forcing myself into a time frame when I am most resistant to creativity and action, I take control by establishing my own time frame for my most productive hours," she says. Klein suggests blocking out at least two hours for your Peak Energy Time.
"Your stress levels will plummet when you're in control of your Peak Energy Time, eliminating procrastination, helplessness and the resulting frustrations that can erode focus and productivity," she says.
Ruth Klein's Guide to Defining Your Peak Energy Time
Are you an Early Morning Person? Block out 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Are you a Mid-Morning Person? Block out 10:15 a.m. - 12:15 a.m.
Are You an Early Afternoon Person? Block out 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Are you a Mid-Afternoon Person? Block out 2:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.
Two Rules from Ruth Klein to Maximize Your Peak Energy Time:
Rule One: Adopt the 100% Responsibility Rule.
Recognize that you are responsible for your time. Take pro-active steps to plan to accomplish your most important tasks during this time period. If you have two tasks that must be achieved before the end of the day, handling these two tasks during this important period will eliminate the stress that can take place if you wait until less energized periods of your day.
Rule Two: Protect Your Peak Energy Time Boundary.
No one else will protect the boundaries of your Peak Energy Time. You must take pro-active steps to avoid interruptions. Tell your co-workers, friends and families that this time period is your Peak Energy Time, and ask them not to interrupt you during this period unless there is an emergency. Don't accept invitations to visit friends or run errands. If you can avoid it, avoid scheduling meetings during this important period. Your productivity is at stake! Protect your boundaries!
